Koi Fish Diseases – Chilodonella, The Koi Killer
By Kao Lee of Koi Stop
One of the most common, yet hazardous koi fish diseases is the Chilodonella. This is caused by a one celled parasite called a protozoa and can be really hard to diagnose or recognize in any kind of fish. These parasites must be treated immediately because if this has already done much damage to the koi, no other treatment will work anymore. The Chilodonella looks like an organism in the shape of a bean. Without a scope, the parasites look a bit like heart shaped onions. Once the parasites have dies, they resemble tiny balls made of bubbles. The symptoms of this koi fish disease are not very recognizable. Most people only notice that something is wrong when there is already extreme damage to the koi fish. There will be a change in the koi’s breathing; the operculum may seem to move in heavy or slow patterns. The koi fish will begin to rub himself against pond ornaments; excessive secretion of mucus causes the skin to look cloudy. A loss of appetite may also be experienced by the koi fish and isolation from other fish, usually near the surface, may also be noticed during the later stages of the disease. Treating koi fish for Chilodonella is actually very easy. Many breeders and koi fish owners puts some salt into the water for up to 14 days. Other ways to kill Chilodonella may be through formalin or malachite, the most common disease treatment for fish. Copper can also be used, but for those who own fish that are sensitive to copper, it is best to consider other types of medication. High heat of up to 86 degrees F or more in 5 days will be able to kill the parasite, as well as acriflavine, anti-parasite medications and potassium permanganate. Although there are many ways to kill Chilodonella, it may be more of a challenge to recognize the disease before the koi fish gets killed. The best way to avoid this is to make sure that preventive measures are done so not to allow Chilodonella or other diseases to affect the fish. Checking on the koi fish from time to time will help keep track of the fish’s conditions before its too late. Regular vet visits or visits to an expert will also enable you to track down any early signs of Chilodonella or any other diseases.
